Billy Stockman survived the Coniston Massacre of Aboriginal people in 1928 in which his mother and family were killed; his father was away hunting and survived. Stockman is one of Australia's best-known artists of the Western Desert Art Movement, Papunya Tula, and one of the senior keepers of his tribe's Dreamings.
