| Description/Remarks |
Tipiloura received his ceramic training at the Bagot Training Unit of Bagot Pottery, which was established by Ivan McMeekin (a UNSW Visiting Fellow) in Darwin in 1968. This bowl was made at The Tiwi Pottery, Bathurst Island, which McMeekin also helped establish. The bowl has straight foot and deep raised sides with a slightly inverted lip. Decorated on inner and outer surfaces with handpainted traditional Tiwi designs in iron oxides beneath a clear overglaze. Outer surface decorations depict four cross-hatched fish within four plain ground quadrants. Each quadrant is divided by a cross-hatched vertical stripe; upper edge of bowl ornamented with a wave- patterned band. Inner edge of rim has a single band of iron oxide; centre of bowl bears a single, cross-hatched fish, with curved body placed within a wider band ornamented with a palm-frond pattern and circles. |
